CCSU Ends Quinnipiac's Season
Blue Devils Finish Second in NEC
November 3, 2008
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Central Connecticut women’s soccer team scored a first half goal and held on for a 1-0 win over Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon.
The loss eliminated the Bobcats (7-7-2, 3-4-2 NEC) from Northeast Conference Tournament contention. Central Connecticut finished the regular season tied for second in the NEC with a 7-2 conference record (10-6-4 overall).
The Blue Devils opened up the scoring in the 34th minute of the first half. Cara Crinion passed the ball from the center of the field to Leah Blayney on the right side. Blayney dribbled to just outside the six-yard box and shot just over Quinnipiac goalkeeper Jillian Kelley (Simsbury, Conn.) for the goal.
The Bobcats saw their best scoring opportunity in the 20th minute of the first half. Furtuna Velaj (Stamford, Conn.) had a breakaway down the right side of the field and attempted to kick a ground ball by Central Connecticut goalkeeper Erin Herd. Herd dove to her right and was able to deflect it. The ball rolled past and hit the left post before bouncing back into the six-yard box where Herd recovered it for the save.
