Brown Upsets No. 11 Penn St.

Bears Ride OT Goal, Good Goalkeeping to Victory

September 13, 2008

STORRS, CT - Freshman Sarah Hebert-Seropian's first career goal with 58 seconds left in the first overtime lifted the Brown women's soccer team to a thrilling 1-0 upset of No. 11 Penn State on Friday.

Junior Brenna Hogue was outstanding in net for Brown (2-1-0) and played a huge role in the victory, stopping a career-high 18 shots, including two in overtime, to record her fifth career shutout.

"This is probably the biggest win for our program since 1994 when Brown defeated Duke, 1-0, at Stevenson Field," said head coach Phil Pincince, now in his 32nd year. "Brenna had an unbelievable game tonight, coming up with several game-saving stops."

Hebert-Seropian scored on Brown's only shot of overtime, lobbing a shot from the left side that hit the crossbar and then bounced into the goal. Minutes before Hebert-Seropian's tally, Hogue kept the Nittany Lions out of the net, stopping Allie Daus in back-to-back one-on-one attempts just seven seconds apart.

Despite getting outshot for the game, 28-13, and 3-1 in overtime, the Bears' defensive core consisting of sophomores Kate Scott (Medway, MA) and Charlotte Rizzi and freshman Allison Kagawa, helped to lift Brown to the win in round one action of the 2008 UConn Classic.

Sophomore Sylvia Stone led Brown with four shots. Playing the toughest two teams in the tournament based on national ranking, the Bears continue action at the UConn Classic on Sunday at 12:00 noon when they face #1 UCLA.
