Brown Takes Down Harvard
Complete Week of Big Upsets
October 14, 2007
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The 14th-ranked Brown men’s soccer team will look to move up a lot higher in Monday’s polls.
Just three days after beating No. 5 Boston College, 1-0, in overtime, the Bears got another big goal Saturday, downing No. 7 Harvard, 3-2, on a 95th-minute OT strike.
Brown’s Dylan Sheehan, who started the winning play in Wednesday’s win over BC, did the finishing this time, potting the golden goal past Harvard goalkeeper Adam Hahn five minutes into overtime.
Sheehan scored twice for Brown (9-1-1, 2-0 Ivy League), which also got a goal from Kevin Davies. Harvard (8-2-1, 1-1 Ivy) got goals from Kwaku Nyamekye and Andre Akpan.
Brown’s Darren Howerton led the offensive attack with a unique front-handspring approach to throw-ins. The lofty throws would hang in the air just long enough for the Brown attackers to get in position to score. Hahn made a couple of punchouts during regulation but in overtime, a ball made it through the Harvard defense and Sheehan knocked it home.
Sheehan scored the first and the last goals of the game. His first goal came in the 15th minute off a rebound that scooted away from Hahn and gave Sheehan an open look. He leads the team with eight goals for the year.
Less than a minute after Sheehan’s first goal, Harvard was awarded a penalty kick. Senior co-captain Matt Hoff lined up to take the shot but pushed it wide left.
Akpan extended his goal-scoring streak to eight games with a mark in the 70th minute, tying the game at 1-1. Marcel Perl gave Akpan a crossing pass and the sophomore standout did not miss his mark with a header. kpan leads the team with nine goals, 24 points and six assists.
The tie lasted about a minute, as Davies scored his seventh goal of the season on a rebound following a Hahn save in the 71st minute.
Nyamekye found his way into the scoring column in the 83rd minute. The goal tied the match at two and sent the game into overtime. A corner kick set up by Hoff and junior Michael Fucito found its way over the defensive line, and Nyamekye was there to finish it off.
