Brown Lifts CCSU Past Marist

Sophomore Scores Winning Goal, Assists on Another

September 18, 2008

Sophomore Christopher Brown scored the game-winning goal and assisted on another to lift the Central Connecticut men's soccer team past Marist, 3-1, on Wednesday.

Senior captain David Tyrie and junior Raphael Guimaraes also scored goals for the 3-1-1 Blue Devils.

In the 30th minute CCSU got on the board first, when Guimaraes put away his first goal of the season less than two minutes after he entered the game. The forward transferred to Central from Franklin Pierce where he was a Division 2 All-American. The scoring opportunity arose when Brown beat a defender up the right side and played a ball into the box. Freshman Eduardo Davila Ortiz flicked it on to Guimaraes who finished on one touch.

With less than five minutes remaining in the half, Marist answered with a goal of their own to tie it up at 1-1. Junior Kevin Brown carried the ball up the right side of the field and fired a perfect shot that hit off the left post and into the back of the net. The goal marked the midfielder's first of the season.

CCSU held an eight to five advantage in shots in the first period, but Marist kept up the pressure with four corner kicks to Central's two.

Just 11 minutes into the second half, junior midfielder Brad Gorham played a ball across the box, just outside of Marist goalkeeper Scott Kessler's hands. Brown got on the back end of Gorham's pass and grabbed the lead for the Blue Devils. The sophomore forward now has three goals and one assist on the year to tie him for the most points on the team, with senior captain Yan Klukowski.

Less than ten minutes later CCSU was given a free kick from 30 yards out and Klukowski sent a ball into the box. The Marist clear made its way back to Klukowski who then played it over the top to Tyrie. The defensive captain controlled the ball and sent his first goal of the season past Kessler and into the side netting.

Kessler finished with four saves and junior goalkeeper Paul Armstrong recorded three for the Blue Devils. CCSU held a 15 to 11 shot advantage for the game, with seven of them coming on goal.

Central Connecticut is now 3-1-1 on the season and will next be heading to Manhattan to play the Jaspers on Saturday September 20 at 7:00 p.m.
