Brown Hosts Old Dominion

Bears Have Lost Just Once All Season

November 27, 2007

Who: Old Dominion at Brown
Where: Providence, Rhode Island
When: Wednesday, Nov. 28 – 7 p.m.

The Old Dominion men’s soccer team advanced to the second round of the tournament after beating Brown’s in-state rival, Providence, 1-0, on Saturday.

A.J. Kulp gave the Monarchs the first-round triumph with his 67th minute strike. The win improved Old Dominion to 13-6-3 overall and set up a date with the one-loss Brown Bears.

Kulp has done it all season for Old Dominion. He led the team in scoring during the regular season 16 points on four goals and eight assists, followed closely by Trevor Banks’ 15 points (six goals, three helpers).

While Kulp and Banks solidified the attack, Evan Newton kept things stable for the Monarch in the back. The second-year goalkeeper posted a 0.60 goals-against average and a .818 save percentage this year. His play was one of the main reason the Monarchs earned an automatic berth into the NCAA field after capturing the CAA Tournament title over Towson in penalty kicks.

Brown (15-1-1) received the sixth seed and a first-round bye in the tournament after claiming its 19th Ivy League title with a stellar 7-0-0 record this season. This will be the Bears 23rd appearance in the College Cup and their eighth trip in the last 11 years.

Sophomore Dylan Sheehan leads Brown in scoring with 10 goals and six assists for 26 points. Tied for the team lead in goals is senior Kevin Davies with 10 tallies to go along with three assists for 23 points. Junior Darren Howerton (Northboro, MA) leads Brown in assists with nine.

Brown’s only loss of the year came at the hands of Boston University earlier in the season. In that game, BU freshman Aaron O’Neal put one past Brown keeper Paul Grandstrand in the 63rd minute to give the Terriers a hard-fought, 1-0 win.

The goal was just one of seven scored against Grandstrand in 11 games (10 starts). The 6-foot-3 freshman registered a 0.66 GAA and a .841 save percentage on the season.

Material from school press releases was used in this report.
