Breakers Notebook: Defeat BC in Scrimmage

First Set of Cuts Held Friday

March 12, 2009

WESTWOOD, Mass. – Kelly Schmedes scored three goals and Kristine Lilly added a goal and assist in the Boston Breakers’ 6-1 win over Boston College in the team’s second preseason scrimmage Wednesday afternoon.

Sophia Mundy had a pair assists as the Breakers, who are now 2-0 in the preseason after last week’s 2-0 win at UConn, got off to a 4-0 lead at halftime and outshot the Eagles 19-9 in the match. All 17 field players present in camp saw action in the game.

Boston has two more days of training this week before leaving on an eight-day training trip to South Florida.

Roster Taking Shape

The Breakers will have their first set of league-mandated cuts on Friday, cutting down from 29 players (22 in camp plus seven either injured or on national team duty) to a maximum of 24 in camp. The team released four players on Monday; Caitlin Fisher, former Mutiny standout Mary Frances Monroe, Ashley Nick and Cortney Sobrero.

The team’s opening day roster of 18 players plus four developmental players will be announced on March 25.

Across the Pond

While the majority of the team is battling it out in preseason training in Boston, six players have yet to see the pitch with the Breakers as they have been over in Europe with their respective national teams. Angela Hucles, Heather Mitts and Amy Rodriguez are returning home after the USA’s loss in the Algarve Cup final. Meanwhile, Alex Scott and Kelly Smith of England, as well as Canada’s Candace Chapman have been playing in the Cyprus Women’s Cup.

All six players will meet the team in Florida next week to resume preseason training. Brazilian forward Fabiana, meanwhile, is rehabbing a knee injury back in Brazil and has not reported to camp yet.

Sunshine State Scrimmages

The Breakers will take part in a pair of scrimmages while in South Florida next week. Boston will see its first WPS opponent when they take on the Chicago Red Stars next Wednesday, followed by a contest against the University of Florida next Friday. The Breakers have two Gator alums on their roster in Mitts and Stacy Bishop.
