Moore Nets First Career Goal In 1-1 Tie

April 26, 2010

The Boston Breakers picked up a key point on the road amid wet and windy conditions when they drew against Saint Louis Athletica 1-1 in Women’s Professional Soccer action at the Anheuser-Busch Soccer Park in Fenton, MO on Sunday.

With this result, both teams remain undefeated with a record of 1-0-2. In what would have been a battle for first place, both teams came up short and now sit in a three-way tie with the Philadelphia Independence for third place in the standings.

Coming out strong, Boston got on the board first when Kristine Lilly stepped up to take a corner in the 21st minute, sending a driven ball to the top of the box. Defender Kasey Moore ran onto the ball sending a long shot into the back of the net for her first goal with the Breakers. This was Lilly’s second assist in 2010, both coming off corner kicks.

Reminiscent of last week’s match against Philadelphia, St. Louis evened the score just six minutes later when Aya Miyama was fouled and awarded a free kick. Tina Ellertson headed the ball to Carolyn Blank who then headed it past goalkeeper Ashley Phillips, making it 1-1 heading into the second half.

U.S. women’s national team keeper Hope Solo to give up just her second goal of the season after out-shooting Athletica 11-4 in the first half. Solo came up big in the 39th minute, making a diving save on a shot from Lilly, and then another when Kelly Smith attacked on the rebound.

Athletica had the better of the play in the second half - with Eniola Aluko having a couple good chances - but neither team was able to find the final push to bring home the necessary win to secure first place at the end of match day 3.
