Rodriguez, widely known as "A-Rod" in soccer circles, led USC to the 2007 NCAA national title. She was the only draft-eligible player that was on the Beijing Olympic team. She assisted on Carli Lloyd's game-winning goal in USA's 1-0 win over Brazil in the gold medal match.
"This is such a great honor, especially since there are so many great girls here,” Rodriguez said. “I'm so pleased that Tony and the Breakers made me their first choice. I am looking forward to the opportunity to go out there and play soccer.”
Boston’s other picks were: defender Kasey Moore (third round), forward Jenny Nobis (fifth round), forward Kelly Schmedes (sixth round), defender Ariel Harris (sixth round), forward Lindsay Vera (seventh round), midfielder Ashley Nick (eighth round), midfielder Allison Martino (ninth round), midfielder Stacy Bishop (10th round) and keeper Jaimel Johnson (10th round).
"There were a lot of picks I was pleasantly surprised about,” said Breakers head coach Tony DiCicco. “I was amazed that Kasey Moore was still available for us; same with Ashley Nick. I was delighted to be able get Kelly Schmedes and Jennifer Nobis. All our picks I was pleased they were still available for us.”
Martino’s name may be a familiar one to local soccer fans as a player for the Boston Renegades. Nick was a teammate of Rodriguez at USC.
"This was a big step, obviously,” DiCicco said. “It is exciting to think about getting this group of players in and compete for positions; to build this team as a family and win. It is one step at a time and we have a lot of work to do to accomplish our goal of being the best team in the league."
In addition to the 10 players selected in today's draft, the Breakers also acquired the WPS playing rights to England international defender Alex Scott via a trade with the Chicago Red Stars that was finalized on Thursday. Boston sent its natural second round (14th pick overall) and fourth round (28th overall) picks to Chicago, in exchange for the Red Stars' sixth (41st overall) and 10th round (69th overall) picks.
In order to stay under the league maximum of international player negotiating rights, the Breakers relinquished their rights to Brazilian international Maycon.
