Bobcats Snare First Home Win

Quinnipiac Men Take Down Vermont

September 26, 2009

HAMDEN, Conn. The Quinnipiac mens soccer team won its first game at home this year, downing Vermont, 2-1, Saturday.

Senior Kevin Nunes scored his first-career goal and added an assist in his first start of the season as the Bobcats improved to 3-0-4 in 2009. Vermont remains without a win this season as the loss drops the Catamounts to 0-5-3.

We came into this game focused on ourselves and things that we need to do to be successful on the field, said Quinnipiac coach Eric Da Costa. We have had some new players out there and we have spent the time to make sure they know their roles so they can contribute and help our team.

After a defensive first half, the Bobcats scored two goals four minutes apart early in the second. Junior Nick Pelicaen opened the scoring in the 56th minute on a shot to the lower left corner. Nunes made a quick centering pass to Pelicaen cutting through two defenders before beating the Vermont goalkeeper for his first of the season.

Nunes followed that with his first goal in the 60th minute. This time Pelicaen made the center pass to an open Nunes at the top left of portion of the 18-yard box. After stopping the pass, the senior midfielder put a shot into the lower left corner, beating the Catamounts Tom Critz in goal. It was the first multi-point game of Nunes collegiate career.

Vermonts Matt Hennessey finally put his team on the board in the 80th minute. Hennessey put a ball into the upper left corner of the goal on an assist from T.J. Gore. It would be the only ball Quinnipiac senior goalkeeper Freddy Hall would let by as he turned away three Vermont shots in the final period.

For the game, Hall made five saves, while Critz turned aside just three Quinnipiac shots. The Bobcats remain undefeated at home with the win, posting a record of 1-0-3 in Hamden this season.
