Last-Second Goal Snaps Falcons Winless Streak
October 17, 2007
WALTHAM, Mass. – Time was running out on the Bentley women’s soccer team Tuesday. The Falcons hadn’t won in six games and were less than two minutes away from running that streak to seven with a double overtime tie to a team with six wins.
But, with just 74 second left in the second OT, senior Bridget O’Malley potted her second goal of the match to give Bentley a 2-1 win over Southern New Hampshire.
It was the second two-goal game this season for O’Malley. The other? A 2-1 win over Post, a game in which the Milton, Mass., native again ended things in OT.
The win lifted Bentley (8-7-2) past Saint Anselm into sixth place in the Northeast-10 and squared the Falcons’ conference record at 5-5-2. Southern New Hampshire, which would have overtaken Bentley in the standings with a win, instead fell to 6-10-1 overall and 4-8 NE-10.
After a scoreless first half, O’Malley staked the Falcons to the lead in the 48th minute, scoring on a 3-on-2 on a pass from junior Ashley Reynolds (Cumberland, R.I./Cumberland HS). Reynolds was also credited with the helper on O’Malley’s game-winner.
Southern New Hampshire, which had a 24-11 advantage in shots, received the equalizer from defender Kristina Cardoza (Stoughton, Mass.) with 12:43 left. It was the first collegiate goal for the freshman.
Three-time NE-10 Freshman of the Week Kara Smith (West Springfield/West Springfield HS) earned the win in goal for the Falcons, recording nine saves. Her counterpart for the Penmen, junior Stef Young (Natick), had three saves.
Bentley will continue its regular season-ending four-game homestand against St. Michael’s Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
