Taylor Twellman’s debut was a grand one.

The Revolution forward, who missed the first six weeks of the 2008 season, entered the eighth game of the year Sunday at halftime against Chivas USA and scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal ten minutes later in a 2-1 New England win.

Only a last minute consolation goal from Chivas kept Revs 'keeper Matt Reis from coming away with a shutout.

Kenny Mansally gave the Revolution the lead in the 18th minute. A perfect pass from Jeff Larentowicz split two Chivas defenders and allowed Mansally to use his speed and beat the two into the box. The 19-year-old Gambian youth international entered the box and then sent a curling shot into the lower left corner of the goal, out of the reach of 'keeper Brad Guzan, for his second goal of the season and a 1-0 Revs’ lead.

This was after Jesse Marsch should have put Chivas ahead in the 10th minute after he got the ball near the penalty spot while the Revolution defense was still out of shape after arguing for a hand ball. Marsch unleashed a powerful shot towards the upper corner, but Jay Heaps managed to get in the path of the ball and deflect it wide.

The Revs’ Mauricio Castro forced Guzan into a great save in the 44th minute after getting on the end of a great through ball from Mansally. The Honduran International continued his run towards the top of the box and then unleashed an impressive right footed strike that Guzan did well to acrobatically punch over the goal.

Twellman, who missed New England’s first seven games after tearing his medial meniscus in his right knee during a training session before the season opener, doubled the lead in the 58th minute. The club’s all-time leading scorer entered the match at halftime and scored 13 minutes later on a well played give-and-go with Steve Ralston.

The play started at midfield and ended with Twellman outpacing his defender at the top of the box and sending a low left-footed shot into the far corner of the net for the 2-0 advantage.

Shavar Thomas had a chance to pull one back for Chivas in the 84th minute, getting on the end of a Sacha Kljestan corner kick. Thomas directed his header towards the near post, but saw it land wide of the net.

Twellman nearly had his second of the match in the 86th minute. Wells Thompson played a nice ball to Twellman at the top of the box, where the striker sent a low blast towards the far post. The shot was out of the reach of Guzan, but landed inches wide of the goal.

Chivas pulled one back in the last minute of stoppage time when Maykel Galindo got the ball in the box and dribbled around Reis. Galindo sent the ball across the goal line to Justin Braun, who slotted it past two Revolution defenders and into the net for his first MLS goal.

The win improves the Revs record to 4-3-1 on the season and leaves them in third place in both the Eastern Conference and overall in MLS.
