BU women win league crown
Sixth Conference Title in Nine Years for Terriers
October 24, 2008
The Boston University women’s soccer team (12-5-1, 7-0 AE) clinched the America East regular season crown outright with a 2-1 victory at UMBC (2-16-0, 1-6 AE) on Thursday afternoon.
Senior Marisha Schumacher-Hodge and sophomore Corie Halasz each found the back of the net as the Terriers extended their unbeaten streak to nine games.
It is the sixth regular-season title in nine years - fifth outright - for the Terriers, and they will enter the tournament as the No. 1 seed. In addition, BU is one win away from tying a program record for longest winning streak as the team has now won six straight.
Schumacher-Hodge lit up the scoreboard just 43 seconds into the game when senior Elizabeth Speck sent a cross from 40 yards out that she was able to get on the end of and tap in to the lower right corner of the net. It was the fourth goal of the season for the senior midfielder.
Halasz scored the eventual game-winner at 50:25 off a long pass from junior Mara Osher that split the UMBC defense. Halasz got a few touches on the ball before unloading a strike into the lower left corner.
The Retrievers cut the deficit in half at 80:40 when Brooke Piper scored her first goal of the season. The rest of the way, the Terriers allowed just one more shot - a strike that went wide in the 89th minute.
BU out-shot UMBC, 14-8, and forced seven shots on frame, while also holding a 10-4 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
Next up for the Terriers is Hartford on Sunday at 2 p.m. Following Sunday’s contest, BU will prepare for its semifinal game of the 2008 America East Women’s Soccer Championship on Nov. 2 at Nickerson Field.
