Freshman's Two Goals Propel Terriers

October 11, 2007

BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman Aaron O’Neal scored twice to lead the Boston University men’s soccer team to its first America East win of the season, a 2-0 triumph over Maine Wednesday night at Nickerson Field.

The frosh forward picked up his team-leading fourth and fifth goals of the year to improve the Terriers to 6-5-0 on the season, including a 1-1-0 record in the America East conference.

The Terriers got things started in the 42nd minute when O’Neal and junior Neil Hlavaty peppered Maine goalkeeper Nemanja Kostic with three shots in a row before O’Neal banged home his own rebound to put BU up, 1-0.

O'Neal added an insurance goal at 53:20 when he received a feed from junior Jin Oh deep on the left side and put the ball in the back of the net past Maine's second goalie of the night, Giacomo Brunino. It was the young striker’s first multiple goal game. He now leads the Terriers in scoring with 11 points on five goals and one assist.

Maine (2-8-1, 0-1-1) was dominated on the scoresheet, getting outshot by the Terriers, 15-4, and losing the corner kick battle, 8-1. Kostic and Brunino combined to make eight saves in split duty for the game.

Terrier red-shirt sophomore goalie Joe Cullaro made three stops and earned a shutout in his first career start.

Next up, the Terriers take a break from conference action to host Big Ten opponent Penn State on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. on Nickerson Field.
