BU Senior Invited to Breakers' Camp
Schumacher-Hodge Enjoyed Strong Tryout Performance
February 16, 2008
Boston University women’s soccer senior Marisha Schumacher-Hodge has been invited by the coaches of the Boston Breakers to participate in its preseason camp, following a strong showing at the teams tryouts on Feb. 9-10.
The new women’s professional league – the Women’s Professional Soccer League – will begin play in late March and must have all rosters set by March 25. WPS team rosters may carry a maximum of 18 senior players and four additional developmental players.
“We are thrilled for Marisha that she was selected from the open tryouts as one of the standouts during the two-day camp, and that the Breakers coaching staff thinks she has the potential to compete with the highest level of players in this country and internationally,” said BU head coach Nancy Feldman. “It is also a tribute to our program, current and former team members, that one of their own is being recognized as a potential professional caliber player.
“We are not surprised, as Marisha showed her skill and athleticism this past year while she was as a dominant central midfield player for us.”
Schumacher-Hodge, who led the team in goals (5) and tied for the team lead in points (12), will graduate from Boston University as one of the most decorated women’s soccer players in school annals. She finished 11th all-time in scoring with 40 career points, and she put an exclamation point on her career reclaiming her title as the America East Midfielder of the Year to go along with the inaugural Fan’s Choice Player of the Year.
Schumacher-Hodge is a three-time America East All-Conference First Team honoree and a NSCAA All-Northeast Region selection as a senior. In 2007, she was named to the Preseason MAC Herman Trophy Watch List, college soccer’s most prestigious honor.
The WPS, the highest level of women’s professional soccer in North America, will begin play March 29, while the Breakers open on Sunday, April 5, in Santa Clara, Calif., vs. the FC Gold Pride.
