September 26, 2008
DURHAM, N.C. -- The No. 15 Boston College women’s team opened ACC action Thursday with a 0-0 tie against No. 10 Duke at Koskinen Stadium.
The Eagles are the first team to record a clean sheet against Duke this season, thanks in large part to freshman keeper Jillian Mastroianni. She tied her career-high in saves with eight, including three in the first overtime.
In the first extra session, Duke had a series of consecutive corner kicks resulting in two scoring opportunities. Mastrioanni stopped two shots by Duke’s KayAnne Gummersall. At 104:28, Mastrioanni notched her seventh save of the game on a shot from Duke’s Elisabeth Redmond.
In the second overtime, Duke had the only shot on goal and Mastrioanni preserved the tie for the Eagles with her eight stop of the night.
In the first half, BC’s Brooke Knowlton and Kelly Henderson each had a chance just three minutes into the game. Both shots went wide. At 36:03, BC freshman Alaina Beyar’s shot was saved by Duke keeper Cassidy Powers (two saves) to keep the game knotted at 0-0. The Eagles had five shots to Duke’s three in the half.
The second half was much the same as the two teams went back and forth. Duke had an early corner kick to start the half but Mastroianni turned back Kelly Hathorn’s shot.
BC had 10 shots to Duke’s 13, while the Eagles had just two corner kicks to the Blue Devils’ eight.
The Eagles are now 6-1-2, while Duke is 8-1-1. The Eagles will now travel to Winston-Salem to play Wake Forest on Sunday.
