BC Women Win Boston Derby
Eagles Top Terriers, 2-0
Sept. 3, 2009
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- The Boston College womens soccer team topped Boston University, 2-0, Wednesday night at Newton Soccer Field.
The Eagles scored one goal in each half as they improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Terriers suffered their first loss of the year and fall to 2-1.
BC struck first in the 24th minute when freshman Victoria DiMartino collected the ball off an attempted clearance at the top of the 18-yard box, took it in a few steps and then slotted it into the far right side of the net.
BC continued to pressure the Terriers defense and in the 30th minute nearly struck again when a cross landed right in BUs six-yard box, but junior Corie Halasz cleared away the loose ball that was headed towards the back of the net.
The Terriers first close opportunity came in the 36th minute when freshman Megan McGoldrick sent in a long cross from the right side that an aggressive Jillian Mastrioanni, BCs netminder, came off her line to cut off. With just over two minutes left in the first half, BU senior goalie Janie Reilly came off her line to punch out an attempted BC cross that the Eagles were looking to connect on right behind her.
The Eagles had the last laugh, however, as Chelsea Regan headed home the second goal of the game off a corner kick with just under 10 minutes remaining.
