The Eagles earned their 10th win of the season (10-3-3) and improves to 3-3-2 in ACC play. Virginia is now 11-2-4 (5-1-3).
The Eagles did suffer an injury to starting keeper Sarah Buonomo in the 72nd minute. Buonomo collided with Cerrone and Virginia's Shannon Foley when the Cavaliers sent a long ball into the box. Buonomo's legs were taken out from under her and she left the game. BC sophomore Mae Shamir entered the game and played the final 18 minutes of action.
On the only goal, Crutchfield, who earned her first start of the year, received a beautiful pass from DiMartino in the box. Crutchfield collected the ball and took a quick low shot to the far post by the Virginia goalkeeper Chantel Jones (six saves) at 87:12 in the match. It was Crutchfield's second game-winning goal of the season, while DiMartino notched her team leading fifth assist.
Boston College kept Jones busy all day with eight shots, six in the second half. Crutchfield's goal is only the fifth goal let up by Jones this season. BC's Hannah Cerrone and Brianna Wilson-Byrne led the offensive attack with two shots each off of free kicks.
BC sophomore Melissa Gimpel had a great chance in the 79th minute of play but Jones came up big for the Cavaliers. Gimpel would then set up freshman Brooke Knowlton in the box and the forwards shot from two feet out was corralled by a diving Jones to keep the game knotted at 0-0.
Virginia's best scoring chance came in the 75th minute when Shannon Foley got her foot on a loose ball in the box. Shamir came out of the goal to grab the ball crossed from the left side but it bounced and Foley sent a soft shot to the near post. Cerrone came from the weak side and slid the ball from the goal mouth.
