Eagles Advance to Sweet 16 to Take on ACC Rival Florida State

November 17, 2008

The No. 10 Boston College women's soccer scored three first half goals and never looked back as the Eagles defeated Northeastern, 4-0, in the second round off the NCAA Tournament at the Newton Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon.

Boston College (15-5-2) will now advance to the round of 16 next weekend and play ACC foe Florida State. The Eagles have advanced to the round of 16 four times in the last five years. This is the fifth time in its history the program has advanced to the Sweet 16.

Freshman forward Stephanie Wirth scored her second goal in two games for the Eagles. Wirth one-timed a pass from Hannah Cerrone to the left of Northeastern keeper Stephanie Gordon to give BC a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute of the game. Amy Caldwell started the play when she found Cerrone streaking down the sideline.

In the 32nd minute of action, Cerrone broke down the side line off a great pass from Caldwell. Cerrone ran with a NU defender on her side and created enough space to get a low shot to the far post for a 2-0 BC lead. Cerrone had a goal and two assists in the game, and now has two goals and five assists for nine points this season.

Senior Brianna Wilson-Byrne gave the Eagles 3-0 lead on a great individual effort. After Cerrone switched the point of attack to Wilson-Byrne, the defender carried the ball to just outside the box and fired a shot to the far post for her first goal of the season.

At the half, BC held a 3-0 lead and had out-shot Northeastern, 11-2.

The second half Boston College continued to carry the play. The Eagles would strike in the 72nd minute off a corner kick. Cerrone sent a low ball towards the top of the box, and senior midfielder Kerri McNicholas settled the ball and ripped a shot to the right of the diving Gordon from just inside the area for a 4-0 BC lead. It was the first goal of the season for McNicholas.

Eagles freshman keeper Jillian Mastroianni earned her 10th shutout of the season and improved to 14-5-2 for the year. She had three saves in the match.
