BC Women Dealt First Loss

Own Goal Does in Eagles

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- A tough own goal sent the Boston College women's soccer team to its first loss of the season, a 1-0 defeat at the hands of ACC rival Miami Thursday night.

The No. 4 Eagles fell to 8-1-3 overall (1-1-2 ACC) on a fluky goal off a deflection with only two minutes left in the match.

In the 89th minute, Hurricane freshman midfielder Brittney Steinbruch sent a cross into the BC danger area and the ball deflected off a BC player and into the net for the only goal of the game.The win upped Miami’s record to 7-3-3 (3-1-1).

The Eagles did have some chances, including sophomore Kelly Henderson’s second half bid that cranked off the post. Freshman Brooke Knowlton led the BC attack with four shots. Fellow freshmen Chelsea Regan and Natalie Crutchfield each had two shots apiece and junior Gina DiMartino chipped in with one of six BC shots on goal.

Overall, Boston College had 13 shots, compared to Miami’s nine. Both teams had two corner kicks apiece.

BC goalkeeper junior Sarah Buonomo made four saves, while Miami keeper Lauren McAdam stopped six shots, including five in the first half alone.

The Eagles next play on Sunday at No. 15 Florida State at 1 p.m.
