BC Opens ACC with Loss to Maryland

Terrapins Net Game's Only Goal in 11th Minute

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland senior Graham Zusi netted the game’s only goal in the 11th minute to lead the No. 8 Terps to a 1-0 victory over No. 9 Boston College in the Atlantic Coast Conference season opener for both teams before 2,750 fans at Ludwig Field.

Zusi scored at 11:19 for the host Terrapins, who improve to 4-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in ACC action. The goal, Zusi’s first of the season, came off a cross from junior Doug Rodkey.

The visiting Eagles (2-2-0, 0-1-0 ACC) totaled a 6-5 edge in shots in the final 70 minutes of play. Maryland attempted the first four shots of the game.

BC senior Mike Konicoff possessed perhaps BC’s best first-half scoring opportunity in the 43rd minute. Konicoff collecting a through pass on the near side and sent a hard strike along the ground at the inside of the far post with his left foot that Terrapin goalkeeper Will Swaim made a diving save on.

Boston College opened the second half just as strong as it finished the first, supplying sustained scoring pressure through the early stages of the half.

Just after the start of the second, freshman Edvin Worley settled the ball in the center of the field and inside the box then provided a feed to Konicoff, who blasted the ball just high and wide of the net.

Minutes later, Alejandro Bedoya was hauled down in the center of the field inches outside the 18-yard box. Sophomore Mario Uribe lined up the direct kick and blasted the ball to the upper left corner of the net. Swaim dove and redirected the shot out of play for his finest save of the night.

Senior goalkeeper Chris Brown registered four saves for Boston College, which will next host North Carolina in its ACC home opener on Friday, Sept. 17 at the Newton Campus Soccer Complex.
