The first Aztec goal of the game came in the 20th minute after a combination play between forward Sophia Mundy and midfielder, player/coach Rebekah Splaine. Mundy played the ball to Splaine who fed it back to Mundy with a one-two outside the box. Mundy ripped a hard shot into the corner that Mutiny keeper Lauren Brodeur could not get a hand on.
The second goal came in the 31st minute on an Aztec penalty kick. Defender Kasey Moore took the kick for the Aztecs, and while Brodeur made the initial save, Jennie Nobis, another of the Breakers contingent suiting up for their reserve team, was there for the rebound.
The Mutiny got back into the game just before halftime. In the 41st minute, the Mutiny’s Jennifer Maurer took a shot that Aztec keeper Ashley Phillips was able to get a piece of, but not enough to keep it out of the net, making the score 2-1 at the half.
With much to play for, both teams came out hard in the second half, with the Aztecs sealing the deal minutes from time. Defender Kristen Habenicht played a long ball out of the back for forward Courtney Sobrero to run on to. Sobrero’s long shot hit the back of the net in the 88th minute of play, giving the home team a 3-1 win.
With the win, the Aztecs improve to 8-0 on the season and are in sole possession of first place in the WPSL’s East Conference, while the Mutiny drop to 2-6 in 2009. The Aztecs head to Stonehill College tonight to take on the Bay State Select before wrapping up the regular season at home Saturday against the Adirondack Lynx at 5 p.m. at Amesbury Sports Park.
The Mutiny, meanwhile, prepare to host the Philadelphia Liberty Saturday at 7 p.m. at Agawam High School. It is the team’s final regular season home game.
After closing out the regular season, the Aztecs will learn who their opponent will be in the opening round of the 2009 WPSL playoffs. This marks the first time in team history that the Aztec women have qualified for postseason action.
