Awards Galore for Fairfield Women

Johnson named MAAC Player of the Week; Boudreau earns top rookie honors

September 16, 2008

The Fairfield University women’s soccer team posted a 3-0 week to improve to 6-1 on the year, and move to fourth in the NSCAA/adidas Northeast Region poll.

As a result, two Stags have been recognized by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).

Senior Ahna Johnson (Hamden, Conn.) was named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week, and freshman Kelly Boudreau (Farmington, Conn.) was named the Rookie of the Week. It is the first accolade of the fall for Johnson, while Boudreau was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 8.

Johnson finished the three-game stretch with nine points, including four goals – two of the game-winning variety – along with one assist. In the Stags’ 3-2 win over Yale, she assisted on the game-tying goal in the 85th minute. Then, 24 seconds after the Bulldogs retook the lead at 87:16, Johnson scored her first of the night, to force overtime.

Midway through the first overtime period, Johnson tapped home a corner kick for the game-winning tally.

The midfielder would provide all of the Stags’ offense in the 2-0 win over Jacksonville on the road. Johnson scored the game-winner in the 29th minute and added an insurance goal in the 70th minute. In the team’s win over Georgia State on Sunday, she played the entire 105:22 of a 2-1 victory.

Boudreau played wire-to-wire in net all three games last week. For the week she made 12 saves, with five each coming in wins over Jacksonville and Georgia State. Her goals-against average was 0.93 in the three games and she had a save percentage of .800. The shutout win over Jacksonville was Boudreau’s second of her collegiate career.

The Stags, winners of six straight games, will start a three-game home stand on Friday against Holy Cross at 7 p.m. The home stand continues Sunday when Connecticut visits at 1 p.m.
