UConn's Ford, UVM's Smalley Pick Up Awards

October 28, 2008

Vermont's Drew Smalley was named America East Player of Rookie of the Week after leading the Catamounts to a key win and UConn’s Josh Ford was picked as Goalkeeper of the Week in the BIG EAST after notching his 10th shutout.

Smalley assisted on both Catamount goals of the week, which led to four points for UVM. Smalley set up T.J. Gore in the 60th minute to earn a 1-1 tie against Boston University on Wednesday. The freshman back then set up the game-winner with less than seven minutes remaining in a 1-0 win over Maine on Saturday. Smalley has also played a big part in a defense that has allowed just three goals in six America East games.

Ford picked up his 10th shutout of the season as he and the Huskies held No. 13/23 Notre Dame scoreless in UConn’s 1-0 victory on Oct. 25. Earlier in the week, the sophomore keeper picked up his ninth shutout of the season with a 0-0 double overtime tie against Yale on Oct. 22. Ford picked up five saves on the week, including three against Notre Dame, a team that averages 2.33 goals per game.
